Installation 8HP G-Series

Parts needed

  • Transmission 8HP50/75 G-Series
  • Any supported shifter
  • CANTCU controller
  • Various connectors

Installation

The CANTCU Controller needs to be installed in a dry place e.g. inside the car, or inside the “ECU Box”, if present. For configuration purposes, a USB-B port is present on the top side of the controller. This should be taken into consideration when planning the installation location. Wiring must be done according to the wiring diagrams available for download.

Power Supply

Power input to CANTCU can be connected together with the 8HP transmission power input. Recommended fuse size for combined connection is 15A. Grounding can be done anywhere on the car. Non-OEM installations require a time delay relay (1-minute delayed off) on the power supply for proper function of the transmission. Wire sizes can be found in the wiring diagram.

Time Delay Relay

The saving of adaptation values to the 8HP transmission permanent memory happens after the car has been shut down and while main power to the transmission still is on. This time period needs to be at minimum around 45-60 seconds. The required power supply logic/behavior usually is present on OEM cars. On standalone ECUs and custom builds a separate Time Delay Relay can be used to hold main power on for a certain time period after engine/ignition shutoff.

CAN-Bus

CAN1 on the CANTCU Controller is reserved for communication with the 8HP transmission and a 8HP gear selector (optional). CAN3 is used for car/ECU communication, depending on which integration is used. CAN-bus wiring should be done with twisted-pair cables to minimize interference in the signals. CAN1 has a built-in terminating resistor (120ohm), while CAN3 does not. Depending on installation you may be required to add an terminating resistor on CAN3.

OBD Connector

It is mandatory to include a separate OBD-connector in the wiring (you cannot use car OBD connector). This allows diagnosing the 8HP transmission using a suitable BMW DCAN diagnostic cable and BMW Standard Tools. The connector is wired on CAN1.
